How do I get rid of Frizz?
The first step in getting rid of frizz is to figure out where it’s coming from. Here are 5 common reasons why most people have frizzy hair.
Dryness
If it’s curly:
Curly hair is the naturally the driest of all the textures. The cuticle is already raised and therefore porous and easily damaged. Porous means your hair behaves “like a sponge”. Have you ever put in handfuls of conditioner only to feel like it didn’t do anything? Or that you need a lot to make a difference? Your suffering from dry hair. Getting a nice cut and maintaining proper levels of moisture and protein in the hair will help it behave and make a nicer curl. A regiment of treatments done in salon and at home will help, as will the use of the right shampoo, conditioner and styling products.
It it’s straight:
Straight hair can be frizzy too! Little bits on the top at the part line, around the hairline or the very ends of the hair are common places for frizz to hang out. Straight hair can be dry due to a few factors like heat damage from hot tools, being over processed, breakage and neglect. Staying on schedule with your trims and treatments will help. As will using the right products for heat protection and styling. You may also struggle with oily roots and puffy/dry ends. This is an indication that the Ph of your shampoo may be off, or too heavy for you. Pureology’s Strength Cure is an amazing protein shampoo and conditioner that is light enough on your roots and enough to handle the dryness on your ends.
Product Usage
Using the right products, using enough of the product and applying it correctly are typical issues that can result in frizz when not done properly.
Finding the right shampoo and conditioner do make a difference. There are times when one shampoo set will be perfect for a long time to come and other times you may need to change with the season. If you have any wave or curl, your texture will most likely change with the season. Looser curls and waves tend to be flatter in the winter and frizzier in the summer. Curly to coily hair may shrink and get frizzier in the summer. The products you used during the cooler months won’t be potent enough to handle the humidity and frizz that comes along with it. Redken has a few product lines that work well for frizzy hair. For coarse hair that feels almost crunchy, stiff or just very dry in general, All soft mega is recommended. For moderately dry hair use the original All soft line and for overall frizz and reduced puffiness use the Frizz dismiss line. Not sure which one is right for you? Contact the salon and set up a free consultation so we can assess your hair in person to help solve these issues. We will go over what to use, how to use it and what the benefits are
A side note on drug store products: Typically the Ph is very high and that opens the cuticle even further, causing more dryness, porosity issues and make your hair more difficult to manage overall. We cannot recommend products outside of the salon because of this issue and also because we have the most knowledge on how to properly use the product lines we carry.
Breakage
Breakage can happen to anyone. But how can it cause frizz? When your hair breaks the ends are often dry, stiff and split, these hairs are also shorter than the rest and tend to stick out and aren’t easy to style. Often times it’s hair that never seems to grow, (even though your roots are showing) this is an indication that breakage is happening. Sometimes a glasses hinge can get caught and cause breakage, or over doing it with hot tools around the hairline and part line can be to blame. Learning how to properly blow out your hair means you won’t need the flat iron as much and it will help those shorties grow.
Many times over processing the hair or not taking care of color treated can be a major cause of breakage and frizz. If your hair is over processed you will love Redken’s new Bleach recovery line. It will strengthen, add moisture and help your hair recover after a highlight appointment. Pulling it back or brushing too roughly when it is wet will definitely cause breakage. When the hair is wet it has more stretch to it, and because of this it is more fragile and likely to break. If this sounds like you, stop by and pick up a wet brush and some detangler like Redken’s One United. This will reduce the friction on your hair and add moisture to your locks. If you have extremely tangled hair when wet, an oil will be your best bet. Frizz dismiss Serum or oil mist, All soft Argan oil, or Oil for all are great choices. Ask your stylist for their recommendation.
Frizzy While Sleeping
With curly to coily hair or hair that is puffy and frizzy, your pillow can be rubbing your hair the wrong way and cause breakage and just frizz in general. A satin/silk pillow case or silk scarf/bonnet is best to protect your tresses while you sleep. Silk or satin helps maintain the moisture in the hair while cotton absorbs moisture and dries the hair out, which adds to frizz. For very curly hair, wrapping it in a scarf or bonnet helps the hair stay put and maintain the style more so than going natural with a silk pillowcase. You may want to consider adding a leave in moisturizer or oil before bed to help maintain moisture in the hair. Doing this consistently will help you see a difference in your hair.
Humidity
The warm summer months are great, but the humidity can be a major cause of frustration with a frizzy mane. The higher the humidity, the more help your hair needs. With humidity, the outer layer of the hair absorbs the moisture and swells/expands to cause frizz. The dryer the hair, the rougher the cuticle is and creates the perfect conditions for frizz. If your hair is curly to wavy, consider wetting your hair at the start of the day to restructure the curl and add more products if the humidity will be high. You will need moisture and higher hold to have a fighting chance. Products like Redken’s Hydramelt acts like a primer to prep the hair before adding your gels, creams or lotions. Priming the hair with moisture will also help you use less of your styling products and elongate the curl. For curly - coily hair a leave in conditioner with more moisture is your best bet, followed by curl creams like Frizz dismiss Rebel Tame to elongate the curl. Not sure what to use?
